Prof. Nadjla Chaib
Short Biography
Prof. Nadjla Chaib is an environmental microbiologist at Université 20 Août 1955, Skikda (Algeria), and a faculty member in the Department of Process Engineering within the Faculty of Technology. Her work bridges environmental microbiology, bioprocesses, and environmental biotechnology to develop innovative, sustainable solutions for industrial pollution. She investigates the microbial diversity of oily sludge and the ecological risks of refinery by-products, focusing on the Skikda petrochemical complex.Prof. Chaib leads a Research and Development project in partnership with the Downstream Central Research and Development Directorate (DCRD–Boumerdès) of SONATRACH, aiming to transform hazardous oily sludge into valuable resources through advanced bioremediation, aerobic composting, and AI-assisted process optimization. Her research also explores the use of microalgae and macroalgae for producing biopolymers, biofertilizers, and compost, as well as the remediation of textile effluents using algal–bacterial systems.Through the integration of metagenomic, physicochemical, and statistical approaches, Prof. Chaib’s work enhances understanding of microbial–pollutant interactions and supports the development of scalable bioprocesses for environmental restoration. Widely published and an active contributor to international scientific forums, she continues to promote circular economy principles and greener technologies for a sustainable petrochemical industry in Algeria and beyond.
